  • Accurately assesses lung function to meet OSHA standards
  • Identifies respiratory conditions that may impact safety
  • Performed using spirometry and other advanced techniques

Frequently Asked Questions

OSHA requires that fit testing be conducted annually for all employees who wear respirators. Additionally, retesting should be done if there are changes in the employee's physical condition that could affect respirator fit.

Qualitative fit testing relies on the wearer's senses to detect leakage of a test agent, while quantitative fit testing uses specialized equipment to measure the actual amount of leakage into the respirator. Quantitative testing provides more precise results but requires more sophisticated equipment.

OSHA requires employers to provide appropriate respirators for workers when necessary to protect their health. Employers must implement a comprehensive respiratory protection program, which includes medical evaluations, fit testing, training, and maintenance.

A typical respirator fit test can take about 15 to 30 minutes per employee, depending on the type of test being conducted. Qualitative tests are generally quicker, while quantitative tests may take a bit longer due to the equipment setup and measurements required.

OSHA guidelines specify that employees who wear respirators must be clean-shaven where the respirator seals to the face. Facial hair can interfere with the seal, preventing the respirator from providing effective protection. Therefore, employees with facial hair that lies along the sealing area will not pass a fit test.

If an employee fails a fit test, they cannot use the tested respirator model for protection. The employer must either select a different respirator model or size that fits the employee properly or explore alternative protective measures. The employee must pass a fit test with the new respirator before it can be used in the workplace.

The medical clearance process begins with an employee completing a medical questionnaire that assesses their health and ability to wear a respirator. Depending on the answers, a healthcare professional may conduct further evaluations, including a physical exam, to ensure the employee can safely use a respirator. If cleared, the employee receives certification for respirator use.
