Respirator Fit Testing is a critical component of workplace safety, ensuring employees are protected from hazardous airborne contaminants. Our professional testing services help your organization maintain OSHA compliance while providing peace of mind that your team's respirators fit correctly and function effectively in their work environments.
Respirator Fit Testing ensures that protective masks—such as N95, Half/Full Face Respirators, or PAPRs—fit properly and effectively protect workers from harmful particles, gases, and vapors. Our comprehensive testing process includes:
We assess each employee's health status to ensure they can safely wear a respirator, including questionnaire evaluation by licensed healthcare professionals.
Learn MoreOur comprehensive lung function assessment ensures employees can breathe comfortably and safely while wearing respiratory protection equipment.
Learn MoreUsing sensory detection methods to verify respirator seal integrity, this testing is ideal for N95 masks and half-face respirators.
Learn MoreUsing precision instrumentation to measure respirator seal effectiveness, providing numerical data on fit quality for full-face respirators and PAPRs.

Professional respiratory protection solutions ensuring workplace safety and regulatory compliance
Our pulmonary function testing evaluates lung health by measuring capacity, airflow, and gas exchange efficiency. This essential assessment ensures employees can safely use respirators without respiratory health complications.
Our thorough medical clearance process ensures employees are physiologically capable of wearing respiratory protection safely and effectively in their work environment.
Our qualitative fit testing uses sensory detection methods to verify respirator seal integrity, providing a cost-effective solution for many workplace applications.
Our quantitative fit testing utilizes advanced technology to measure respirator seal effectiveness with precision, providing objective numerical data suitable for all respirator types including SCBA systems.
OSHA regulations require annual fit testing for all employees who use respirators. Additional testing is required whenever there are changes that might affect respirator fit, such as significant weight changes, dental work, facial surgery, or scarring in the seal area.
Qualitative fit testing relies on the wearer's sensory detection of test agents to identify respirator leakage, while quantitative testing uses specialized equipment to measure the actual concentration of particles inside and outside the respirator, providing a numerical fit factor. Quantitative testing offers more precise results but requires more sophisticated instrumentation.
OSHA's Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134) requires employers to implement a comprehensive respiratory protection program that includes workplace hazard assessment, appropriate respirator selection, medical evaluations, fit testing, training, proper use procedures, cleaning and maintenance protocols, and regular program evaluation.
A typical respirator fit test requires 15-30 minutes per employee. Qualitative tests generally take less time to administer, while quantitative tests may require additional setup time for equipment calibration and preparation. The total time also depends on how many different respirator models need to be tested for each individual.
OSHA regulations prohibit facial hair that comes between the sealing surface of the respirator and the face or that interferes with valve function. Employees with beards, stubble, or other facial hair that crosses the respirator sealing surface cannot achieve a proper seal and will not pass a fit test. Only respirators that don't rely on a face seal, such as certain PAPRs with loose-fitting hoods, may be used by employees with facial hair.
If an employee fails a fit test, the employer must provide a different respirator model, size, or style that may provide a better fit. The employee must be successfully fit tested with the new respirator before using it in the workplace. If a proper fit cannot be achieved with any tight-fitting respirator, the employer may need to provide a loose-fitting powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) that doesn't require a face seal.
The medical clearance process begins with the employee completing OSHA's mandatory medical questionnaire (or equivalent). A physician or other licensed healthcare professional (PLHCP) reviews the questionnaire and may conduct additional examinations based on the employee's responses. The PLHCP then provides a written recommendation regarding the employee's ability to use the respirator, including any limitations or follow-up evaluations needed.
