Respirator

Understanding this OSHA term is essential for workplace safety compliance and protecting your workforce.

menu_book Official Definition

A personal protective device that is worn on the face, covers at least the nose and mouth, and is used to reduce the wearer's risk of inhaling hazardous airborne particles (including infectious agents), gases, or vapors. Respirators are selected based on the hazard and must be NIOSH-approved.

business_center Why This Matters to Your Business

When engineering controls are not feasible or sufficient to protect workers from airborne contaminants, employers must provide appropriate respirators and implement a comprehensive written respiratory protection program (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134). This program includes medical evaluations, fit testing, training, proper selection, use, and maintenance. Non-compliance can lead to serious health issues and OSHA violations.
