Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL)

Understanding this OSHA term is essential for workplace safety compliance and protecting your workforce.

menu_book Official Definition

An occupational exposure limit established by OSHA. PELs are legal limits in the United States for employee exposure to a chemical substance or physical agent (like noise). They are typically expressed as a time-weighted average (TWA) concentration for an 8-hour workday, but can also include short-term exposure limits (STELs) or ceiling limits.

business_center Why This Matters to Your Business

Employers must ensure that employee exposures to hazardous substances do not exceed OSHA PELs. This requires hazard assessment, air monitoring, and implementation of control measures (engineering controls, administrative controls, PPE). Exceeding PELs can lead to serious health effects and OSHA citations.

QuickCare Solutions How QuickCare Supports You

QuickCare Solutions supports your efforts to manage exposures below PELs. Our Respirator Fit Testing and training on respirator use are critical when respirators are needed to control inhalation exposures to levels below PELs. We can also facilitate referrals for industrial hygiene services that conduct air monitoring to determine exposure levels. Our medical surveillance support services may be relevant for substances with specific PELs and associated health monitoring requirements.
