Permit-Required Confined Space (PRCS) or Permit Space

Understanding this OSHA term is essential for workplace safety compliance and protecting your workforce.

menu_book Official Definition

A confined space that has one or more of the following characteristics: contains or has the potential to contain a hazardous atmosphere; contains material that has the potential to engulf an entrant; has an internal configuration such that an entrant could be trapped or asphyxiated by inwardly converging walls or by a floor that slopes downward and tapers to a smaller cross-section; or contains any other recognized serious safety or health hazard (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146). Entry into PRCS requires a permit and strict procedures.

business_center Why This Matters to Your Business

Identifying PRCS and implementing a compliant entry program is critical and legally mandated by OSHA. Failure to do so can lead to fatalities. This program includes identifying hazards, atmospheric testing, attendant duties, rescue plans, and comprehensive training. It's a high-risk, high-priority area for safety management.
